Michigan Appellate Assigned Counsel System Accepting Applications
SADO's Sister Agency Opens Roster for Level I Attorneys
The Michigan Appellate Assigned Counsel System, the state agency that coordinates the appointment of counsel for indigent felony appeals, is accepting applications for Level I roster attorneys. Level I roster attorneys represent defendants on appeal who were convicted at a jury trial of an offense carrying a statutory maximum sentence of 5 years or less, or by plea or at a waiver trial of an offense carrying a statutory maximum of 10 years or less.
Based on the information contained in the application, the assessment of any supplementary materials, and review of any work by the applicant on prior felony appeals, MAACS will select the most qualified applicants who are members in good standing of the State Bar of Michigan to attend an orientation training program required for placement on the MAACS roster as a Level I attorney. Roster membership requires travel throughout Michigan to counsel incarcerated clients and advocate in circuit and appellate courts. Applicants must have outstanding legal research and writing, communication, trial and appellate court advocacy, and negotiation skills. Demonstrated commitment to indigent defense is preferred.
For consideration, submit a cover letter, resume, completed MAACS Roster Application, and two writing samples. The writing samples shall consist of a brief or memorandum of law, on any subject, personally prepared by the applicant. A writing sample prepared in law school will suffice if no other is available.
The MAACS Roster Application can be accessed and downloaded from the State Appellate Defender Office (SADO) website. Send the completed application package by November 15, 2013 to:
