Detroit and Wayne County Community Law Center to Open
Indigent and low-income residents, families of incarcerated individuals, and those people re-entering into Detroit and Wayne County communities after incarceration will find assistance for things such as driver’s license and traffic issues, low-level warrants, housing and economic matters, and arrest and conviction records in a new, non-profit community law center. The center – the Detroit Justice Center – is expected to open in the spring of 2018 and will help those in the community suffering the effects of “mass incarceration and its ripple effects across the community,” according to the center’s founder and Executive Director, Amanda Alexander.
Ms. Alexander, on the faculty of U of M, established the Prison and Family Justice Project at the U of M Law School in 2013 and is known as a racial justice attorney and system-reform advocate. In addition to a $600,000 grant from the Detroit-based McGregor Fund, the center will also receive a like amount from New York-based NoVo Foundation.
