SADO Seeks Attorney for Juvenile Lifer Unit
Apply by May 25, 2018
SADO is looking for an attorney to join our Juvenile Lifer Unit. This is a temporary position (now through Sept. 2019 with the possibility of an extension). The attorney will work collaboratively within Juvenile Lifer Project Teams, developing mitigation evidence, reviewing trial transcripts and appellate decisions, evaluating and managing expert witnesses, engaging in negotiations with prosecutors, and conducting hearings in trial courts throughout Michigan. It is a great opportunity to do this type of unique and important litigation.
Required qualifications include admission to the Michigan bar (or eligibility for immediate transfer), a high degree of familiarity with legal issues surrounding juvenile sentencing, and a willingness to litigate new and creative issues in the trial court or on appeal.
Preferred qualifications include experience in capital cases, death penalty phase litigation, or juvenile lifer resentencing hearings; experience in both trial and appellate courts; and experience in negotiating with prosecutors, preparing mitigation for clients, and working with expert witnesses. We are particularly interested in attorneys with significant trial experience.
Salary will depend on experience. Fringe benefits include health, dental, 401k, and 12 paid holidays.
To apply: Submit a cover letter including office location preference (Detroit or Lansing), resume, writing sample, and a copy of your law school transcripts to: Wendy Dealca, State Appellate Defender Office, 645 Griswold, Ste. 3300, Detroit, MI 48226, Email: wdealca@sado.org, Fax: 313-965-0372.
Application deadline: May 25, 2018.
