Michigan Safety & Justice Roundtable Releases Final Reports
The Hudson-Webber Foundation convened the Michigan Safety & Justice Roundtable in September 2018 in partnership with the Michigan Committee on Juvenile Justice, the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, the Michigan League for Public Policy, and the Michigan Council on Crime and Delinquency. The two-day Roundtable was convened to support and advance safe and equitable youth and adult justice systems in Michigan (where the number of incarcerated persons has increased by 450 per cent since 1973) and to craft “common-sense” justice policy recommendations to move Michigan forward. Roundtable participants included experts in juvenile and criminal justice from local and state government, members of the judiciary, law enforcement, academics, community leaders, and philanthropic funders.
The Hudson-Webber Foundation has now released two companion reports arising from the Roundtable that are extremely relevant to those working in the criminal justice system.
The first of the two reports, titled Co-Creating a Vision for Effective & Equitable Solutions for Justice-Involved Youth, covers:
- Youth justice data collection and management
- Preventing juvenile justice system involvement
- Diverting youth form the traditional justice system involvement
- Using evidence-based practices to reduce delinquency
- Expanding community-based care for justice-involved youth
- Reentry and aftercare for youth returning home from out-of-home placement
The second report, Co-Creating a Vision for Effective & Equitable Solutions for Justice-Involved Adults, covers:
- Data collection and reporting
- Community policing
- Poverty and confinement
- Alternatives to incarceration
- Reducing length of stay
- Removing post-incarceration barriers
